GC8000 Error 604 – Oven Overtemperature
Oven temperature exceeded safe operating limit and protection activated.
Case Snapshot
- Analyzer: Yokogawa GC8000
- Error Code: 604
- Application: Refinery – Process Analyzer Shelter
- Status: Analyzer tripped to protect oven
Observed Symptoms
- Oven temperature increased rapidly beyond setpoint
- Error 604 triggered during operation or warm-up
- Analyzer entered protective shutdown
- Heater output remained ON despite shutdown command
Initial Actions Taken
- Analyzer powered OFF immediately
- Heater supply isolated for safety
- Alarm history and temperature trends reviewed
Immediate shutdown prevented oven damage and column degradation.
Detailed Diagnosis
- Oven temperature trend confirmed runaway heating
- RTD resistance checked – normal and stable
- Heater control signal measured – stuck ON
- Heater relay continuity checked – relay contacts welded
Root Cause Identified
The oven heater relay was mechanically stuck in the ON position, causing continuous heating regardless of controller output.
Corrective Action
- Oven heater supply isolated
- Oven control board removed
- Faulty heater relay confirmed
- Oven control board replaced
- Temperature control re-validated
Result After Fix
- Error 604 cleared after restart
- Oven temperature stabilized at setpoint
- No further overtemperature events observed
- Analyzer returned to normal operation
Failure Logic (Simplified)
Lessons Learned
- Error 604 is a serious safety-related fault
- RTD health does not rule out heater runaway
- Relay failure can cause uncontrolled heating
- Immediate power isolation prevents equipment damage
