GC Backflush Operation – Fundamentals
Backflush is a critical GC technique used to remove heavy or late-eluting components from the column. It improves cycle time, protects the column, and stabilizes retention times in process gas chromatography.
Normal Analysis vs Backflush
During normal analysis, light components flow forward to the detector. After the target components elute, the valve switches and reverses flow to flush heavy components safely to vent.
Key Points for Technicians
- Backflush removes heavy hydrocarbons before they reach the detector.
- Prevents column contamination and long tailing peaks.
- Incorrect backflush timing causes missing or distorted heavy peaks.
- No backflush results in increasing cycle time and baseline rise.
- Most backflush failures relate to valve actuation or timing logic.
